In 1973 idealistic hippies from across Australia made the journey to a small country town called Nimbin to celebrate the Aquarius festival. In the following years countless alternative communities were born in the Northern NSW region, making it home to an active environmentalist movement, that continues to this day.

Aquarians is a documentary series that takes viewers into the homes of these alternative communities and the people who built them. The portraits feature community leaders, artists, teachers, poets, film-makers, activists and musicians who were instrumental in Australian counter-culture movement.

When making the photographs I stood beside the sitter, capturing their reflection in a window as they looked to the outside. Reflections of interior and exterior worlds intermingle in the glass, the subject occupying space in both places.

I respectfully acknowledge the people of the Bundjalung nation, traditional custodians of the land on which I live and work, and pay my respect to Elders, both past and present, their culture and continued connection to land, water and community.
